Description
Rex 5/10 - Rex Meltman opened the first Bloomington Athletic Club in 1950. Two years later, there was a glut of athletic clubs that caused traffic backups on Center Street, which previously held just one traffic light.
The newly opened Bloomington Athletic Club, directly across from Gate 5 of the Will Rogers Complex, started charging members an entrance fee. Not wanting to split its members, the club offered memberships to a large family — making it an instant success, Meltman told the City Council Monday.
